However, it just seems odd that as late as 1984, the word and the frame of mind that goes with it would be used so casually and regularly. Another stated inspiration was the success of. After several excruciating days, following a near deadlock, the jury returns a miraculous not-guilty verdict. I still do not understand how there are so many complaints about that word when you'll almost never hear complaints about the F word or other profanity from any number of other authors.
Setting aside for the moment my gripes over some of the language used in the book one vulgarity in particular , Grisham does a nice job of capturing the setting and providing an authentic feel and voice to his characters. That's the message of this movie, plain and simple. Like in the movie, the real Gary Webb attempted to uncover the connection between L. The city has also always been a tourist-area, and always had some form of gambling before it became The Las Vegas of the South - perhaps that has tempered the people there from the state's interior's citizens. Never before have I been that frustrated by a protagonist who behaved like an asshole towards his wife and just about everyone else he encountered, but was still portrayed like the absolute hero. In the end, it's not really about racial justice, it's about class prejudice and liberal hypocrisy. I'd like to advise everyone to watch this film again and, as an experiment, to replace the raped daughter with a raped 70-year-old mother. John Grisham is very transparent with his characters, makin A Book not worthy of a reread, and most certainly did not belong on my Contemporary Literature reading list. I confess that when one of my book clubs made this our monthly selection, I approached it with more than a little trepidation. In fact, it may be one of his best. Jackson in his grief and anger shoots both men as they enter the courthouse for their pre-trial hearing and faces a trial that could lead to his execution if he is found guilty of their murder. It doesn't pander to any particular race, but rather plays upon everyone's racial prejudices and stereotypes. Two White men raped a nigger she-male??? Because he visits Matthew McConaughey's character who tells him the men will get off. While this may act as a testament to the strength and courage of the people of the south, the fact remains that the principles laid down by this tradition defy civil rights and respect for humanity.
