Eddie's wife's death from cancer has left the family deeply in debt, and Eddie has taken a job that requires him to travel for several months. All of the material is seen through the eyes of the boys, especially Jay, the older, who will do a lot of growing up during this summer - as will Aunt Bella, who sometimes seems like his contemporary. Regardless of her mean demeanor, she ultimately loved her family. But when he writes in a slightly historical sense, as with this play, he's wonderful.
